Ford has filed for trademarks for electric versions of its Maverick and Ranger pickup trucks.Interestingly, the automaker has filed different trademarks in Europe and the US. In Europe, Ford has filed to trademark the names “Maverick Lightning” and “Ranger Lightning” while in the US it is calling them “Maverick Thunder” and “Ranger Thunder".It's possible that a new Ranger Lightning could use a lot of carryover parts from the F-150 Lightning, and will likely be no smaller than the upcoming combustion-powered 2023 Ford Ranger, reports Motortrend. The Ranger Lighting could also offer both rear-and-all-wheel drive configurations.
The new Ford Ranger's platform is compatible with all forms of electrified powertrains, spanning from a mild-hybrid system, to a fully-electric model.
As the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning officially entered production, Ford CEO Jim Farley hinted that the Ford Ranger EV might be on the way. Farley shared, “We’re already pushing dirt down in Blue Oval City in Tennessee for another electric pickup truck that’s different than the F-150 Lightning.”Expect the Ranger Lighting to debut in 2025.
